History of the Municipality

The Municipality was named after the military airport (which used to be located where the “Jane Sandanski” polyclinic and the “Goce Delcev” military barracks are today), which was bombed by Nazi Germany in April 1941.

Airplanes were introduced very late in Skopje, as the latest and cutting-edge means of transport. The airport was called “Skopje”, and it was located at the farther end of the city, in today’s settlement of “Aerodrom”.

The first passenger jet landed in Skopje on June 15th, 1928.
The airplane was a “Potez-29” model, and it was transporting 5 passengers.

In 1929, the Thessalonica-Skopje-Belgrade airplane line was introduced. The departure timetable was scheduled in such a way that it saved the time of the passengers and merchants from Thessalonica. The airplanes departed from Skopje at 7 a.m.

The Great Head of the Skopje District, Antonio Vildovik, being an aviation fan and Head of Government, in 1925 bought a French airplane - “Keljdran”, which was the first civil (sports) airplane in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

The first pilot was M. Yeroshenko.

In the autumn of 1926, the first airline meeting took place, presenting some military airplanes and an appropriate program. Airline meetings were organized each year at Zajcev Rid and in Old Aerodrom.

The visitors of the airline meetings could take an airplane ride for 30 dinars.

An interesting moment, according to the old Skopje inhabitants, was the landing of Amy Johnson, one of the world’s first female pilots, at the Skopje Airport in 1930, on her way back from Australia to London.

In 1937, under an agreement with the airline companies of “Aeroput” and Sidna, the Ministry of Traffic established airplane line with the Kingdom and with foreign countries. This airplane line route brought the “Pravda” newspaper from Belgrade, too.
